Kingston unveil 256GB memory stick

July 6, 2010

Kingston has just released the largest ever portable flash drive the Data Traveler 300. This device comes with a massive 256GB of potential data storage. This means that in theory you can store more than the average laptop hard disk drive and estimates of this massive data storage potential includes over 50,000 jpeg images, 54 film dvd’s which is also the same as 365 CD’s of music.

Kingston Technology have also claimed that the device will allow for quick data transfer speeds. There is also a password utility for the device (which flash-data-recovery recommend you do NOT use see this article for information).

This pocket sized device rivals pretty much anything in the portable data storage market for both flash based and rotational spinning platter based storage media. Thus far the largest available USB memory Sticks have generally been of the 64GB sized variety and the largest portable hard disk drives have recently just exceeded 320GB with the issue of both 500GB and 1TB portable storage drives. SSD drives which Kingston also manufacture are generally available is capacities of 64 / 128 and 256GB.

It is likely that these type of devices will become more popular in time, the first USB memory Sticks issued in the late 90’s only had small data storage potential of 64 / 128 and 256MB but advances in technology and also the increasing demands of consumers data storage needs have seen these capacities now rivaling those of many PC’s and laptops. It is, however, unlikely that these devices will catch on immediately as they are priced at over £500 +vat making them out of the affordability for many – for now!
